What are Blackheads?

A blackhead is a small black or yellowish swelling in the pores of the skin that manifests itself in the form of a tiny protuberance. Blackheads form when the pores of the skin are clogged due to excess dead skin cells and other pollutants. Blackheads are prevalent among oily skin types, but can also be found on people with normal skin.

Blackheads are usually the first sign of an acne breakout. When skin is not cleaned properly, substances such as dead cells and dirt can clog up pores and accumulate the oil that is produced by hair follicles.

Blackheads can also form when oil glands are stimulated due to any hormonal reasons, such as puberty. Excess oil secreted as a result of hormonal imbalance petrifies into small balls which turn black upon contact with air.

Blackheads can be reduced by keeping the skin clean and adequately exfoliated. Avoid any pollutants that can clog up the pores, such as too much make-up or touching your face with dirty hands.

Blackheads can be extracted safely as long as they are not infected. A small amount of force is required to squeeze the hard ball of oil and pollutants out of the pore. It is best to extract blackheads after a steam/sauna, or washing the affected area with warm water. It is not advisable to use fingernails while extracting blackheads, as nails can cause irritation and scarring.
